About the League

The Juneau Youth Football League (JYFL), founded in 1978, has provided sports opportunities for Juneau's youth for over thirty years. Its original goal was to create a safe and wholesome football program for the youth of Juneau, teaching sportsmanship; teamwork; respect for self and others; goal setting and attainment; a sense of community; and leadership skills. Early in its existence the program was expanded to include a youth cheer leading program (females have always been welcome in the football program); and later, the creation of high school club football which eventually became the JDHS Crimson Bears football team. With the establishment of booster clubs for both High School programs JYFL stopped providing direct support for high school programs in 2009 and returned to its original focus of youth from kindergarten through middle school. JYFL supports between 300-400 boys and girls in its programs annually, with the season opening football and cheer camps in the late summer followed by its regular season running August through October. Fund raising, administrative activities and coaches' training also occurs throughout the calendar year. The program hosts an annual winter general membership meeting that is open to the public.

While the official goals of the program are listed above, the informal goal and operating mentality of the JYFL is to "make them want to come back!".  Only if the kids have a positive and rewarding experience will they want to do so. In years past JYFL, like many youth sports programs, experienced a drop off in interest as kids enter their early teens. Our recent experiences are reversing these trends. By working extremely hard to build evenly competitive teams with a focus on local fair competition, we are seeing more kids stay with the program and playing as freshmen in the two high school programs now offered in Juneau rather than only the elite athlete moving on.

JYFL IS PARTIALLY FUNDED BY THE CITIZENS OF THE CITY AND BOROUGH OF JUNEAU THROUGH SALES TAX REVENUES.
